I recently designed two pairs of bikinis for Australian label Kini Swimwear! The good news is you can now get your hot li’l hands on them!
I grew up in the small coastal town of Narooma. Every afternoon after school I would race home and throw on my bikini even if the cold feeling of yesterday’s swim was always still apparent – this feeling was just the feeling of Summer to me and it served me right for always leaving them in a clump in the bathroom, despite my mother’s endless efforts to try and make me hang them on the line.
I don’t think I could live anywhere that wasn’t close to the ocean. Even as an adult I’ve never grown tired of watching the sunset or sunrise change the colour of the sky, watching the tide or breathing in fresh sea air. No matter where I am in the world – the familiar sound, smell and feel of the beach will always be my home.

As a kid and teenager I lived in a swimmers/bikini throughout Summer and not much has changed as an adult. It sounds so cliche, but I love the crunch of salt in my hair and the taste of salt on my skin after a long day at the beach. It brings so much happiness and lets my mind return to a much simpler place. Summertime reminiscing is such a great feeling – I usually become quite nostalgic and think about fun beach adventures with my high school friends, calloused “summer” feet, jumping off rocks at bar beach, chip sandwiches, sun tan oil, ice cold slurpees and melted ice-creams from our local ice creamery.
This Summer – I can feel it’s already going to be a good one. We’ll be getting married, our house is on a cliff, we live super close to the beach and if this past week is any indication for what the weather is going to be like – sign me up! I am looking forward to paddle boarding, running and surfing this Summer! I am going to try and be outdoors as much as I can (ensuring that of course I slip, slop, slap).
In collaboration with Australian bikini label, Kini Swimwear I have designed two classic bikinis for you.
In collaboration with Australian bikini label, Kini Swimwear I have stayed true to my roots and Substance’s aesthetics and designed two classic bikinis for you. The striped bikini reminds me of a bikini I had as a teenager which I wore religiously. The blue polka dot bikini reminds me of my mum and her sister’s in the 70’s, when beach culture was prominent. I didn’t design with trends in mind, rather pulling inspiration from my years at the beach and countless afternoons on the eastcoast.
You can purchase these two incredible designs at Kini Swimwear (Striped) and (Polka Dot)
Big thanks to Jonathan Hayward, my amazing husband-to-be for the imagery.
