I’ve been talking a lot about inner health lately, but let’s not forget the the importance of natural skin care. Here are some of my favourite products at the moment!
My skincare routine is fairly simple.
But first, here’s a little bit of background about my skin. From the ages of 13-17 I had pretty bad acne. My entire family got on board to try and “solve” my skin issues, because it looked sore and angry and it was really affecting my self-esteem. I tried everything from ph balancing soaps, to Cetaphil, to Clearasil and nothing seemed to work. I used to cover my pimples with cheap makeup, because I just wanted it gone; of course that only made things worse!. So, I basically just lived with it, changed my diet here and there (cutting out dairy). When I was around the age of 18 my skin started to clear. I guess hormones settled and it just magically cleared up. Since then I have been so cautious of skincare and I have always ensured I have a great skincare routine in place, because I don’t think I could handle having skin like my teenage years ever again.
I feel like because I have experienced bad skin I have my system down pat. There are things I have in place now that ensure my skin is healthy all the time. Yes, of course I still have the occasional breakout – we’re all human – but for the most part my skin is clear. did. Every few months I like to trial some brands to see if they might work well with my skin. Recently I discovered the Swisse Skincare line which I’m really loving because all the products are made from natural ingredients that support skin health.
Cleanser: I discovered oil-based cleansers last year. My skin is classified as combination skin – it gets dry and it gets oily. I like an oil based cleanser like the Swisse Moringa Cleansing Oil, because it’s good for all skin types and is moisturising as it cleanses. It doesn’t strip your natural oils like some cleansers, which is bad for aging!
Toner: I have always been one of those girls who skipped on the toners. I began using a toner about a year and a half ago when I introduced an “adult” routine. You know, the time in your life when you think “Hey, maybe I should start using a night moisturiser, maybe I should start using a toner”. I like the Swisse Deep Sea Hydrating Mist Toner, because it’s a spray on toner. It’s easy to use, I love the cool feeling and it’s safe and free of harmful chemicals.
Rose Hip Oil + Moisturiser: I have given rose hip oil to my Mum, sister, sister in law and JD – basically EVERYONE in my immediate circle. I’m actually obsessed with it. I recently discovered the Rose Hip Moisturiser by Swisse which makes things a lot easier for me (instead of applying both a mosituriser and oil, I just apply this one). I apply this directly after a shower so it absorbs quickly and then I apply make-up. I love this product and all of the Swisse line because they are made from natural ingredients that support skin health.
Eye Cream: (I just realised I forgot to take a photo of the one I use! Silly me!) I am only 25, but I am all about preventative measures. Eye-cream is something I use before make-up. I find concealer just sits a lot better and doesn’t crease as much if it’s nice and moisturised. I still have fine lines under there (damn it), but if you keep them moisturised it makes things so much better. Basically my routine is: Make-up remover, cleanser, toner, moisturiser, eye-cream. I do this morning and night. I also do a mask every Monday evening when I have a bath. Such a good habit!
SOME OF MY TIPS
Apple Cider Vinegar: I try and have this once a day. It’s good for your gut health, thus, it is good for your skin. JD introduced me to this circa 2012, and I haven’t looked back since. Make sure you brush your teeth after you have it though because it is acidic!!
Change your pillowcase: This one is so hard to remember sometimes, but make sure you change your pillowcase and sheets regularly. It’s a breeding ground for bacteria with all those dead skin cells, oils, sweat and saliva!
Remove your make-up: I know you have heard this 1,000,000 times from your mum, but it is so important to remove make-up. I see it as: You wouldn’t skip cleaning under your arms, so why would you leave a face full of make-up. It’s not only the make-up, but think how many bad toxins and yucky things from your day are on your skin, they will go into your bed if you leave it on!! I use the Swisse Micellar Makeup Remover. It removes makeup so easily without tugging on your lashes.
Those are the basics of my skincare routine! I find keeping things simple works best for me and I tend to stick to the same products. What are your skincare favourites?
