When it comes to sports luxe, it’s all about mixing comfort and style while making a statement. Less lax, more luxe.
My family traveled a lot when we were little. I distinctly remember a holiday to The Snowy Mountains where my eldest sister had a huge argument with my parents about having to wear her white Nike runners/sneakers with some terrible 90s DIY bell-bottom jeans. I say terrible because it was the 90s and in retrospect she probably should’ve have worn them.
Fast forward 18 years or so and fashionable active wear is receiving a well-deserved high-fashion resurgence and I for one, aren’t complaining. I will happily pair any pair of jeans with sneakers, any day of the week. Most of us have embraced the fact we can wear active wear 24/7. Even the sneakers with tailored work trousers or pencil skirt during your daily commute doesn’t look unusual anymore. I mean, you could probably even get away with not changing into heels if your workplace allowed it.
I find myself reaching for running tights to pair with my favourite piece of knitwear on a Saturday morning coffee run more than any other piece in my wardrobe. It’s comfy, it’s stylish and it’s easy. Easy in the sense that you can throw together a simple, yet put together look in a matter of seconds. Not easy in the sense of not trying.
I remember when sports luxe dominated the runways 5 years ago and other times in the past – people were quick to adopt, but critics were quick to say the silhouettes and pieces didn’t have longevity, but, every year since designers have consistently showcased collections characterised by sporty silhouettes.
Blurring the boundaries between sport, street and tailoring has never been so easy – think bomber jackets, loose knits, statement jackets and sneakers.
Here are some key pieces to help you style sports luxe in 2016
THE BOMBER JACKET
2016’s outerwear choice is definitely the bomber jacket. They come is a number of colour ways and fabrications. My advice is to stick with neutral colours or earthy tones; black, khaki or navy! Loving Cotton On’s Crystal Bomber from their new ath-leisure range!
I am a huge advocate for the sneaker worn with everything, which is a dream come true for you if you walk a lot!! They key is to choose a sleek sneaker so your outfit looks polished and not like you have just finished at the gym.
I know I was just saying my sister had terrible 90s jeans, but a huge 90s trend that is filtering through it logos. Wear a logo printed t-shirt with jeans and sneakers for a modern look. Swap sneakers for heels for an evening look.
To take the trend to the next level try a raincoat / anorak. The smooth, ultra modern fabric creates texture and adds the perfect sports luxe / urban vibe to any outfit. Team with anything from tights, to denim.
